Everything that we’ve heard about writer/director Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You indicates that it will be one of the must-see-on-opening-night-with-a-packed-house films of the summer. Riley’s taken the crazy that blankets our modern condition and turned it up to 11, while recruiting an all-star cast in order to help him translate his dialogue to screen. And, on Thursday morning (May 17), Annapurna Pictures dropped a red band trailer for the film just so you can see how nutty and fascinating that this film is going to be.
Let’s say that it begins with Armie Hammer snorting some of the critical praise that blanketed this film when it came out at Sundance, so, yeah. It’s that kind of movie, and we are most definitely here for it.
Take a look, y’all:
This is another member of the double-miss club (thanks to our critic getting the flu at Sundance and the snowstorm that hit Boston during SXSW), but we’re about as pumped as humanly possible to see this motherfucker when it drops later on in the summer. Riley looks like he’s crafted a piece that’s full of bite but also full of real comedy — that great gag about the garage door opening up while Tessa Thompson and Lakeith Stanfield are about to get it on is a wonderfully funny bit — and we just can’t wait for this film to enter our eyeballs. We have a copy of the screenplay sitting around somewhere (thanks to Riley publishing his script in McSweeney’s back in 2014), so maybe it’s time to crack that open and take a look.
Here’s a synopsis: In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe.
Sorry to Bother You hits theaters on July 6.
