New Sounds: Lorde finds pop strength in simplicity on ‘Perfect Places’

After she named 2017 the year of our Lorde, the New Zealand alt-pop star gave us two new tunes from her album Melodrama in fairly rapid succession. Since the release of “Green Light” and “Liability,” however, Lorde’s been rather tight-lipped about new details of her new album — until Tuesday, when she announced that something was coming on June 2.

She delivered a day early, however, releasing the tune — which we now know is called “Perfect Places” — this afternoon.

This new track from Melodrama, which drops June 16, is the closest thing to Lorde’s Pure Heroine era we’ve heard thus far, except with some more “cheers to that” optimism sprinkled in.

Lorde revels in her grand entrance into adulthood, singing “I’m 19 and I’m on fire” and “Every night, I live and die/Feel the party to my bones.” The singer cites the track as one of her favorites from her forthcoming sophomore album.

Still, even she’s not sure what’s she searching for.

“What the fuck are perfect places, anyway?” she wonders as the song fades out. Whatever the answer is, we may find out June 16.
