We try to not look too deeply into band names here at Vanyaland, mainly because we all agree that 99.99 percent of the cool ones are already taken. But we couldn’t help but notice that a band playing the Lilypad this Saturday (August 6) are called Queen of Jeans. Do they rule over the preferred pants of the young and modern? Or have they colonized a village full of people named Jean? Maybe, just maybe, they… wait, hold on…
Oh never mind all that, just listen to the Philly group’s self-titled debut EP, which dropped back in January but has only recently come to our attention in advance of their aforementioned Cambridge gig this weekend, when they share the stage with Mariam Saleh’s BONGWISH.
Released by Super Fan 99 in the United Kingdom and Third Uncle Records here in the States, Queen of Jeans’ six-song EP is an impressive collection of swoon-worthy guitar-pop, the kind of harmonious throwback sounds that arches over all the usual decade suspects and twirls around the high school dance of our grandparents. Tracks like “Pup” and “Won’t You” waltz around with yearning honesty, while the more upbeat “Rollerdyke” provides a nice bit of fidgety fuzz. It’s like Cults meets Lady Pills so obviously they are our new favorite band ever.
The entire record, streamable via Soundcloud, is a nice bit of hazy summer daydream-pop, so we’re grateful they’re rolling into our ‘hood just as the heat kicks back in. Check out all the current Queen of Jeans’ tour dates below.
