It’s easy to get caught up in the ultimately unimportant details of Billie Eilish. She’s a teenager born and raised in Los Angeles, raised in an art-minded household by two actor/musician parents. She began singing in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus when she was 8 years old, which when you think about it really wasn’t that long ago. She lists Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator, and Earl Sweatshirt as influences. She has a sound that falls somewhere between the cinematic Del Rey and the beautiful simplicity of Lorde. And Zane Lowe described her earlier today as “an amazing new talent.”
That was when he premiered “Six Feet Under”, Eilish’s new song, on his Apple Music Beats 1 radio show. And the music arrives at the perfect time, as tomorrow’s release of the moody, atmospheric, and brilliantly sparse track already seems like a big deal.
A lot will likely be written about Eilish in the coming months, but for today, at least, we have innocence wrapped gently within one of the best tracks of 2016. Where it goes from here is anyone’s guess. But that’s not important.
