Boston Rock Common: Outside The Box festival announces extensive performer lineup

Hey Smash Mouth — you have company.

With less than a month to go before its opening night, the free, all-ages Outside The Box Festival has released its full performer lineup. And the excess of homegrown talent is certainly enough to be motivated to head downtown and catch some live music on Boston Common the week of July 13 to 17, even if the headliners like Smash Mouth, Daughtry, and Zap Mama aren’t your cup of tea.

On the local front, included in the roughly 90 or so names released late Tuesday evening are soul singer Ruby Rose Fox, dance-pop crew Bearstronaut, hip-hop breakouts Dutch ReBelle and Latrell James, garage rock noise makers Creaturos, and recent Rock and Roll Rumblers Analog Heart and Johnny Blazes & The Pretty Boys.

We’re also stoked to see bands and artists like We Were Astronauts, Jenna Lotti, and What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? in the mix as well alongside national acts like Kaki King and Red Baraat.

We also now know what night Smash Mouth are playing — July 14. Mark it down.

“It’s a celebration of performing arts in our city like no other,” Outside the Box managing director Susan Shields Darian said a few weeks ago at a press conference. “[A] melding of arts culture and innovation that makes the city so exceptional.”

The five-day festival will also feature performances that include theatre, dance, spectacle arts, magic, and arts education, as well as launch OTB Interactive, described in a press release as “a celebration of Boston’s entrepreneurial and creative spirit.”

The individual day and stage lineups will be announced in the coming weeks. Check the full list of performers below.
