Purple light has been everywhere around the world since Prince passed away last week, and last night, it lit up The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. R&B singer D’Angelo paid tribute to the fallen music icon with an eloquent and heartfelt rendition of Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows In April”, joined on stage by Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum, who have performed in the past as Princess.
After changing one of the lyrics (singing “I often dream of heaven/I know that Prince is there”), D’Angelo gets a bit choked up a few minutes in, and we can’t blame him.
We do as well.
Tweeted Questlove after the performance: “i wanna thank @FallonTonight staff for letting that happen. us fans are hurting because we didn’t have a ‘goodbye’ or a chance to mourn.”
