Soundtrack this rainy day with the celestial lo-fi pop of Somerville’s Petra’s Room

We’re not sure where spring went, but we are certain it’s gone. The weekend was a vibrant wonderland across the Boston area, residents sprung from their dwellings and reveled in the excitement of an early onset of springtime. Then, suddenly, it was all washed away. We awoke this morning to a cold rain spraying down upon our commute, and while our disappointment in Mother Nature reared loudly on the MBTA platform, the temperature drop, gray skies overhead, and rhythmic tapping of the falling rain served as the perfect backdrop to two new excellent tracks from Petra’s Room.

The sparse, minimal space-pop project from Somerville uses analog synths, drum machines, and vintage recording gear to create what they bill as “celestial lo fi music”. “Your Reaction” and “Sub-marine”, a pair of debut tracks you can hear below, fill the introductory representation quite nicely; the former a melancholy jolt of dreamy pop, and the latter a gray-ish dab of restrained ethereal bliss.

Further markings of the careful sonic footprint of Petra’s Room comes in this note, sent to us via email: “Some things we like: Solid Space, Young Marble Giants, Rose McDowall, Cher, U.S. Girls, The Sundays.”

Perhaps we can add rainy days to the list as well.
