Do To The Bowie: Greg Dulli covers ‘Modern Love,’ announces NYC warm-up show

Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli has notoriously had a penchant for covers, so it’s no surprise he delivered a take on the David Bowie new wave classic “Modern Love” today as a tribute to the icon who passed away last week. The spirited version of the track, which features a sparse arrangement of just an acoustic guitar and a minimal string section, can be downloaded for free at Dulli’s website or by clicking the link below.

“I tried to record this song with the Whigs a while back and we just couldn’t get it the way I wanted it,” Dulli said in a statement regarding the song. “With [Bowie’s] passing last week, I was reminded of it and decided to finish it myself. The world is filled with love for David Bowie right now. It feels good. I feel inspired by his life.”

Beginning next month, Dulli will embark on an intimate solo tour, his first since 2010, which will see him make stops in twelve different countries for a total of 37 shows, including March 10 at The Sinclair. The tour had been slated to kick off in Europe, but Dulli has now added a warm-up gig at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on February 3. Tickets will go on sale this Friday. A special pre-sale for fans will begin tomorrow with Dulli2016 as the passcode. Joseph Arthur will open the show.

‘An Evening With Greg Dulli’ will feature Dulli leading his stripped down band through a wide selection of songs encompassing his entire career along with debuting several new ones. The tour will be a limited run coming to smaller theatres, churches and a synagogue.

The Afghan Whigs are currently in the studio working on a new album for Sub Pop Records, which will be released later in 2016. More details on that will be announced at a later date. The band’s last album, 2014’s Do to the Beast, was their first in 16 years.
