Time-Honored Groove: Listen to Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed’s mix of Boston’s ’60s and ’70s soul scene

The New Year ahead promises to bring some exciting announcements from singer-songwriter Eli “Paperboy” Reed. But before 2015 ends, the Brookline native has provided an audio snapshot of the city’s unheralded past.

The day after Christmas, Reed returned to town and spun a vintage set at longtime Cambridge dance party Soulelujah, dropping a 16-song mix of old 45s that were recorded and produced in the Boston area.

“Many of you know that in the last couple years I have become captivated by the soul scene that existed in Boston in the 1960s and ’70s,” Reed writes. “Last Saturday at Soulelujah I finally got to spin some of these super rare 45s in the city they were made in and thankfully [Soulelujah curator] Sean Quinn got it all on tape. It put a huge smile on my face to see kids on the floor dancing to soul music that was made in the city of Boston and the state of Massachusetts more than 50 years previous.”

The set was recorded, and is now available for our listening pleasures via Mixcloud. Fire it up below, and scan the full track listing after the embed jump.
