If mainstream pop music in 2015 got weird, it’s only because it finally caught up to what was going on at the local level. Here in Boston, our city’s vibrant, but often overlooked, music scene produced some Grade A gems, spanning the genre spectrum from playful freestyle revivalism to razor-sharp garage rock. On This Is 617, VanyaRadio’s daily program 100% dedicated to homegrown creations, the hodgepodge of sounds and styles was brazenly evident, yet it all added up to a certain vibe that was decidedly Boston. Below are our most favorite selections to come out of our region in 2015, and naturally, this list could have been four times as long. So with apologies to Dirty Bangs (“I’m In Love With The Summertime”), Air Traffic Controller (The House”), Steep Leans (“Nightmare City”), the Sun Lions (“Whatever’s ON Your Mind”), the Rare Occasions (“An Actuary Retires”), and countless others, here are 10 jams, in alphabetical order, that dominated the “This Is 617” playlist over the past 12 months or so, selected by host Michael Marotta.
