Dr. Dre’s long-awaited new album Compton will stream in full tonight on Apple Music, but the rapper, producer, and mogul just gave everyone a huge incentive to actually buy the Straight Outta Compton companion piece when it’s released this weekend: Dre is donating all royalties to building a new performance arts center in the soundtrack’s namesake city.
That’s fucking awesome.
According to Complex, Dre called into Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show to talk about the soundtrack, which drops this Friday, August 7, a week before the NWA bio-pic hits theaters. “Dre not only talked about the process of the album and the work that was put in,” Complex writes, “but he revealed that he will be donating all of his royalties to build a new performance arts center in Compton.
Dre Day, everyday!
“I feel it’s the right thing to do and I hope everybody appreciates the work I put into this album,” Dre said, via Rolling Stone, adding that he’s worked with Compton Mayor Aja Brown on the project. “We’ve reached out to Aja Brown quite a few times in the last month or two. I’ve been really trying to do something special for Compton and just couldn’t quite figure out what it was. She actually had this idea and she was already in the process of working on it. I said, ‘Boom, this is what we should do.'”
Stay tuned for more on the soundtrack as it surfaces later tonight…
