As we learned a few weeks ago, blossoming pop superstar Charli XCX likes to “Break The Rules.” But sometimes she plays along, and a few weeks ago delivered a slightly-modified upgrade of Sam Smith’s soulful piano ballad “Stay With Me.”
The performance came at Live 95.5 in Portland’s Bing Lounge, and Ms. XCX keeps the song’s simplicity while dressing it up in her own boom-clap flair. Spin called it “a Purple Rain-indebted melange of flanged guitars and dusky vocalizations,” and yeah, sure, that works for us.
Charli XCX is about to start up a North American tour in support of the upcoming LP Sucker — and to yell “Boom!” and “Clap” over and over again — and that party train pulls up at Royale in Boston on October 4. Get on it.
