Before Kiesza became pop music’s Next Big Thing and her “Hideaway” music video racked up 74 million plays on YouTube, the Canadian musician and Berklee College of Music alumna first got her start as a folk artist.
And those roots have shined through on this stripped-down cover of Nirvana’s ’90s alt-rock classic “Heart-Shaped Box,” which she performed recently for an NME Basement Session. Watch video of the solo performance below.
Now, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t get a bit excited over the potential of a house music-inspired version of this song when the clip first crossed our desks, but it’s still rather nice. Kiesza’s voice comes to the frontline here, and the guitar just serves as a nice backdrop to keep the tune moving along.
It’s a chill cover. You can’t dance all the time.
