Newer Waves: Watch the trailer for Britpop subgenre doc ‘Flawed Is Beautiful’

These Animal Men

It’s clear that we here at Vanyaland love Britpop and its related scenes so naturally, we’re excited about the release of the first trailer for the upcoming Flawed Is Beautiful documentary. Focusing on the New Wave of New Wave’s most memorable bands These Animal Men and S*M*A*S*H*, Flawed Is Beautiful chronicles the Britpop subgenre and precursor’s rise and fall and the legacy it left behind.

The name is taken from a 1994 These Animal Men song.

“This is their story,” writes director Adam Foley on the documentary’s Facebook page. “It’s a story of £2 gig tickets, high energy rock n’ roll, fundamentalist politics, tabloid outrage, death threats, eyeliner, bad clubs, riots, drugs, fighting and doing it for the kids.”

The documentary features interviews with band members and others who were part of the scene, including writer Simon Price and former Menswe@r drummer-turned-BBC-presenter Matt Everitt. Foley is still conducting interviews for the film and has not yet set a release date.

This is the sound of the youth, indeed.

Check out the trailer below, as well as These Animal Men performing the title cut live in London back in 1995.
