After more than 16 years, the Pill as we currently know it comes to a ceremonious close tomorrow night at Great Scott. The indie dance party was one of the main reasons I moved to Boston in 2000, and I’ve been honored to have been a part of it ever since. But today, I raise a glass to my longtime friend and DJ partner, Ken Powers, who started the night with Jen Sullivan back in October 1997 at the Upstairs Lounge in North Station (above the Penalty Box).
Through the years, some songs have become known as “pill classics,” and we asked Ken to run down his 10 favorite songs to spin to get the dance floor moving. This is the sound of the Pill, from the Upstairs Lounge to the Milky Way, to the Hideaway to the Paradise and Lounge to the Ekco Lounge and finally, our home for the past nine years, Great Scott in Allston.
See you tomorrow night. It will be a good one. Look sharp.
In no particular order… here are DJ Ken’s 10 favorite songs to spin at the Pill:
Superdrag – ‘Sucked Out’
Jacques Dutronc – ‘Les Cactus’
Saint Etienne – ‘Nothing Can Stop Us’
Miles Kane – ‘Better than That’
The Strokes – ‘You Only Live Once’
The Drums – ‘Me and the Moon’
Morrissey – ‘The Last of the Famous International Playboys’
Archie Bell & the Drells – ‘Tighten Up’
Blur – ‘Girls & Boys’
Le Tigre – ‘Deceptacon’
