A few years ago, Worcester’s DOM was living in America. Now he’s off on another planet. It was reported a few weeks ago that the musician fella ditched his band, changed his name to KISS 1O8, and took a new direction in sound. Well, he wasn’t lying.
Taking the vibe of February oddball single “Hot Limit,” the HYPERFANTASY XL record is some tripped-out shit, and a glitchy departure, mostly, from the accessible sunshine-pop of previous singles like “Burn Bridges.” And how so? Because it seems like the dude has stopped giving a shit what anyone thinks / says / or wants. This is a “pop” record but only with “pop” spelled backwards, and might as well be titled Fuck you to all the people who expect another Sun Bronzed Greek Gods.
At just over 35 minutes in length, it’s pretty much one acid-trip mixtape. You can feel your computer morph into a smoke machine within minutes of hitting “play.” By the third track, your human tendencies are pretty much gone. When it hits the nine-minute mark, you could fall into the screen in front of you. Call it daydream-haus. Or DGAF-pop.
After a listening party Tuesday night in New York City, Dom — we mean KISS 1O8 — posted the entire album to Soundcloud sometime around the 7th inning of last night’s Red Sox game. We think this was done to throw off the Boston media. Well played, Mr. KISS.
