Watch the new video for Julia Holter’s ‘In The Green Wild’ /// 07.14.13 @ Church

Church has been bringing in some quality touring acts lately — Big Black Delta, Superhumanoids, and Black Light Dinner Party, to name a recent few — and this Sunday, Los Angeles chamber-pop chanteuse JULIA HOLTER swings by the Fens as part of a seven-date eastern jaunt with San Francisco vocalist Jessica Pratt. Local support is provided by the damaged electronic sounds of Ruby Ridge, and it all adds up to a pretty compelling bill.

Today, Holter released a new video for single “In The Green Wild,” off her upcoming Domino Records release Loud City Song, out August 20, and its baroque feel reminds us very much of all the things we used to love about acts like Rasputina.

Check out the video above, and read what Domino had to say about Loud City Song back in May.

The songs that make up Loud City Song have origins that pre-date 2011’s debut Tragedy – coaxed out and finessed as demos in Holter’s bedroom studio and then finally coalesced into one thrillingly cohesive experience in the latter stages of 2012 by Holter and co-producer Cole Marsden Grief-Neill and an ensemble of Los Angeles musicians. The result is an album of enormous ambition – Holter taking inspiration from Collette’s 1944 novella Gigi and using it as a prism through which to explore her relationship with her hometown of Los Angeles and modern life universally, taking cues from the work of Joni Mitchell and the poetry of Frank O’Hara but forging those touch-points into something resolutely unique.

Works for us. We’re already enchanted by Holter’s mystical pop, and after 2012’s Ekstasis was loved by critics but generally fell off the mainstream radar, we don’t think Holter will be limited to critic-darling circles for very much longer. This is one of those “See him/her in the small room while you can” type of gigs. Her full summer tour sked, including dates with Pratt and a lengthy European run, are listed below.
