Watch the video Boston Calling broadcast to announce their September festival

Just before 9pm Sunday night, there was already a palpable excitement at City Hall Plaza for the National’s closing performance at the first-ever Boston Calling. With 17 bands in the books, there was a sense that the end, brought about by an anticipatingly spectacular set by the National, was drawing near.

That was until co-organizer Brian Appel walked on stage and asked the crowd if they wanted to do it again. They seemed up for it. He suggested September — 13 weeks! — and then a 76-second video flashed up on the giant screens, announcing not only the next act for Boston Calling, but all the participating bands, from headliners Passion Pit and Vampire Weekend to local picks You Won’t and Bearstronaut.

The crowd went nuts.
