Lust For Live: Iggy Pop tells Jarvis Cocker he’s working on new music with a British band

We have not heard the last of Iggy Pop, on record or otherwise.

The iconic Stooges frontman told Jarvis Cocker this week that he’s working with “an English band” on new music, and has had “a bit of a rebound.” Pop joined Cocker’s weekly radio show on BBC 6 Music, and the Guardian has a transcript of the wide-ranging interview, where Pop dishes on how money tends to corrupt young bands, how he finds new music, and his John Peel lecture.

The Stooges released their fifth album Ready To Die in 2013, a year after Pop’s last solo effort, Apres. Since then, the Stooges have seen bad news: Drummer Scott Asheton died at the age of 64 of a heart attack in 2014, five years after the death of his brother, guitarist Ron Asheton.

Here’s a snippet from the Guardian transcript:

Jarvis Cocker: [Y]ou said one of the side issues of doing a radio show and listening to other people’s music was that you might not do so much of your own music any more…

It had been a creepy year, but I’ve had a bit of a rebound. I’m going to do some [music] with a good band, it’s an English band and the groove is wicked. They got together for the first time last week, and I just was so happy. I’m going to do that and do some songs of my own and of the very early Stooges that I haven’t done for a long time. That’s one thing, and then working on new music is another thing, I’m up to something, that’s all I can say.

Meanwhile, Cocker’s last solo album, Further Complications, was released in 2009, and has stressed that no new Pulp music would follow after their recent reunion, which included a handful of North American shows and a 2012 appearance at Coachella Music & Arts Festival.

Here’s a look back at the Stooges back in 1970…
