When trying to be a bit more clever than just offering up “indie-pop” as a description of their sound, A Sunny Day in Glasgow become a tough band to peg. With their start in Philadelphia in the 2000s and ties that now stretch from Brooklyn to Sydney, Australia, the evolution of sound over four studio albums, three EPs, and a healthy lineup turnover has enabled the band to release what feels like a series of debut records.
A Sunny Day in Glasgow’s latest debut, Sea When Absent off Lefse Records, finds Ben Daniels’ crew of one-time shoegazers looking up — and at each other from around the globe.
Guitarist Daniels and vocalist/cellist/keyboardist Annie Frederickson are based in Australia, guitarist/vocalist Josh Meakim and drummer Adam Herndon are in Philadelphia, and bassist Ryan Newmyer and vocalist Jen Goma are in New York City. The crew was never in the same place at the same time during the recording of the album, which makes for some interesting layers and compositions, a swirling technicolor brand of pop both for the dreamers and brash realists. Sound, skillfully, takes on its own meaning, and this is perhaps A Sunny Day in Glasgow at their loudest.
To celebrate the new record, a Sunny Day in Glasgow are kicking off a 19-city July tour across North America tomorrow (Thursday, July 3) at Great Scott in Allston. Joined by local guitar-pop faves Catenine and Sneeze, the show should be a proper introduction to the three-day holiday weekend. When you look up Friday night at the colorful explosions in the sky, the songs off Sea When Absent should come to life once again.
