It’s been a few years since violinist Hannah Thiem was consistently making the rounds on Boston stages with ambient music group Copal. Now based in New York and Los Angeles, Thiem follows years of impressive collaborations and sonic experiments with her upcoming debut solo record, BRYM, and the enchanting first single is out today.
Inspired by a traditional Norwegian folk song, “Brym Al Mar” is a passionate instrumental track that combines Thiem’s ability to merge traditional, world music sounds with modern electronics. It’s a slow-burn number that builds cautiously until its wires begin to fray, and there’s even an Icelandic jaw harp — known over there as a gyðingaharpa — involved.
A mental lesson in cinematic sounds, “Brym Al Mar” is over before you know it — it could be three times as long without any aural discomfort — so hitting the re-play button is inevitable.
We invite you to do just that via the latest Vanyaland premiere, and catch Thiem at the Wanderlust Festival, June 19 to 22 in Stratton, Vermont.
