[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s drummer of synth-punk sextet Petty Morals, Lauren Recchia is used to holding down the beat. Now she’s drumming in harmony with Tom Tom Magazine, Girls Rock Campaign Boston, and a host of musicians for Saturday’s We Got The Beat: A Boston Lady Drummer Showcase at Great Scott. The show features a wide array of styles and sounds, from synth-pop to garage punk to indie rock, and all proceeds go to Tom Tom mag and Girls Rock Campaign Boston.
“I had the idea for this show upon seeing the event page for a showcase that Mindy Abovitz, the founder and editor in chief of Tom Tom magazine, put on in New York City,” Recchia tells Vanyaland. “That is where the only magazine dedicated to female drummers was created, and those shows happen all the time there. I reached out to her and asked if she’d ever had a showcase in Boston, and to my surprise, the answer was ‘no!'”
From there, Recchia went to work, and to provide the sounds she enlisted her band Petty Morals, as well as the Monsieurs (featuring Andy Macbain of Tunnel Of Love and Hilken Mancini of Shepherdess/Fuzzy, Apple Betty, Post Modern Authors, and Thrust Club. She also reached out to Girls Rock Campaign Boston, which specializes in empowering girls from age 8 to 17 and showing them how great playing in a band can be.
“In an effort to also benefit my favorite local group that supports local lady musicians, I asked Emily Isenberg from Girls Rock Campaign Boston if they wanted to be involved,” Recchia adds. “It has become a beautiful joint effort between the three of us and a bunch of the performing band members to support both awesome endeavors. Lemme tell you, musically-inclined females? They get shit done. We mean business and this show is going to be off the hook.”
There will also be raffle prizes from Calderwood Percussion Instruments, PUMA, Doc Martens, and Guitar Center.
