Skeletonwitch is not welcome at the House of Mouse. Disney has booted the Ohio thrash metal band from a show at Downtown Disney’s House of Blues on January 27, deeming them “unfit to be associated” with the family fun park. But get this! First, the HOB isn’t really a part of the Disney World park; it’s located in a Orlando shopping and entertainment district under the Disney Resort umbrella network and caters to adults and old people. And secondly, Disney is allowing Skeletonwitch tour mates Enslaved and Amon Amarth to remain on the show. Well, it’s clear we now know who is the most metal on this winter tour.
The ‘Witch will now play a gig in Jacksonville instead, and join a growing list that includes Machine Head, Gallows, and Exodus as metal bands banned from Disney’s empire. Talk about Goofy.
Consequence of Sound’s Rock It Out blog caught up with Skeletonwitch guitarist Scott Hedrick on Wednesday to discuss the incident. The video is posted above, and the interview kicks in at the 3:35 mark. “They’re booking metal show there which is great; and, I mean why are you bringing that type of show there if you then are that worried about it being deemed unfit?” Hedrick tells CoS. “It seems kinda reductive to book these shows and then split hairs about which evil dark heavy metal band can play and which one can’t. Don’t book those types of shows if you’re keep having to cut people off the bills.”
Hedrick seems pretty amused by the entire situation, and the Rock It Out host said the Orlando House of Blues had no comment on the cancellation.
Skeletonwitch hit the road with Black Dahlia Murder for the rest of 2013, and new record Serpents Unleashed drops October 29 on Prosthetic. Here’s their full tour itinerary; they’re at Boston’s House of Blues on February 1.
