UPDATE #2, June 27, 5:04pm: The show is unlikely to be moved; TT’s has replaced it with a benefit for Rosie’s Place, a Boston women’s shelter

Friday’s COLD CAVE show at T.T. The Bear’s Place in Cambridge has been completely sold out for a few weeks. But with the event less than 48 hours away, now the show isn’t happening at all, and it has little to do specifically with Wes Eisold’s synthpop band. The Central Square venue’s management have raised questions and concerns over the opening act, controversial noise artist Boyd Rice.

A similar cancellation happened for a June 19 show at Morgan’s Pier in Philadelphia, and a gig in Chicago on Monday was disrupted after a smoke bomb went off just as Rice was about to hit the stage. Shows this week in Montreal and Toronto have also been called off, according to Chart Attack.

Rice, a one-time collaborator with British experimental band Death in June, has been tied to Nazi and Satanic groups in the past, and has been labeled as a misogynist who speaks out against women and supports rape culture.

“We’ve made the decision we didn’t want this person in the room,” T.T.’s manager Kevin Patey told Vanyaland. “After researching the artist and discussing it with promoters in other cities, we made it clear to the agent that we didn’t want this person to perform at our venue. We weren’t canceling Cold Cave, but the agent said the show wouldn’t happen without the opener. It was the agent’s decision. So regrettably, the show was cancelled.”

There is word that T.T.’s will fill Friday’s suddenly-vacant date with Boston bands playing a fund raiser for local womens’ groups and/or shelters in need.

Refunds to the originally scheduled Cold Cave show are available at the point of purchase.
