As the sun sets on Boston I’ve become rather enraptured by this new track and video from Welsh producer/songwriter Pete Lawrie Winfield, who creates warped, tripped-out pop songs as UNTIL THE RIBBON BREAKS. “I was born with my back to the stars,” reads Winfield’s Soundcloud page bio. “Turn me over. I would like to see.”
That simple approach fits his music, although most minimalist sounds don’t carry this much depth. Following the success of electronic/r&B single “Pressure,” UTRB has given the eyes as much as the ears can absorb with a new video for “2025,” a throbbing low-end number that’s accompanied by a hazy, ’80s-style news reel, video game screens, and junk food assembly lines, reinforcing the song’s message about our mixed-up times.
It’s interesting, however, to note the span of time Until The Ribbon Breaks is acknowledging here, singing about the confusion and despair of modern times with both throwback visuals from three decades ago and a song title referencing a dozen years into the future. If he’s saying we’re fucked, he’s also saying we have been, and will continue to be. He’s likely correct.
