When exactly did we start getting hyped for Venom? We’re not totally sure, but somewhere along the line, our dunking on this movie on Twitter eventually shifted towards a general excitement for Ruben Fleischer’s take on the classic Spider-Man villain. Maybe it’s Tom Hardy’s utterly bizarre accent, or how genuinely silly swole-ass thicc Venom looks on the screen, or that Fleischer managed to assemble a cast significantly above this movie’s pay grade somehow, but we’re kinda pumped for this! This new trailer, which Columbia Pictures dropped for your viewing pleasure on Tuesday, will most likely cause you to laugh, and we’re pretty sure that’s the kind of reaction they’re hoping for. Well, at least we think it’s the one they want.
Take a look:
Good god, that looks hilarious! We’re really kind of into just how far they’re leaning into the wackiness of this particular character, who was basically dreamed up by the wet dreams of nerds in the ’90s who read Dark Knight Returns and wanted Spidey and company to go “dark” and “brooding” like Batman did. We’re willing to suggest that there is no way you could make Venom look good on screen — even the Man Bites Dog-styled backdoor pitch that Joe Lynch made a few years back suffered from this same problem — but Fleischer has figured out that the goofier this project is, the better it’ll ultimately be. We’re also fascinated by the conspicuous lack of Spider-Man imagery (that giant white Spider-symbol really would go a long way in making this look a little less ridiculous), but we’ll take a superhero take on Upgrade any day.
Here’s a super short synopsis, which actually features the word “badass” in its description One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.
Venom hits theaters on October 5.
