It’s been a hot minute since we last swam the digital seas with The Rare Occasions, the Providence-born garage rock band who riffed and slashed their way into our hearts with a series of infectious singles and EPs. This spring they’re busy doing business out in Los Angeles, and have supplied the first taste of their debut long-player (Into The Shallows, self-released on May 25) with a sprawling indie-fit of a jam titled “Mercy Mercy”. The new joint finds the band trudging across a fine line of prog, yacht rock, and shoegaze, all wrapped tightly under The Rare Occasions’ penchant for relentless hookage, psych-rock density, and ambitious time signatures. It’s the kind of warped guitar-pop you’ll find slow-cooked under a desert sun, and the only thing causing shadows are the band’s grand designs on their own evolution of sound. Be sure to ride this one out to its thrilling conclusion. Featured photo by Deanna Archetto.
