No matter when or where you grew up, chances are your route to success and self-fulfilment was paved with haters and naysayers. We’ve all experienced a certain kind of pessimism — from teachers to relatives to random assholes encountered during mundane daily routines — from those who’d rather tear down than build up. Some of us thrived on it, while others allowed the belittling and constant nit-picking to shape who they were. For many of us, those people were so-called educators.
Detroit-born electronic-pop singer CYN has a message for the detractors: The woman born Cynthia Nabozny, and her people, well, they all turned out “Alright.” CYN’s rubbery new alt-pop jam is full of confidence and inspiration, a proper GTFO to those who thought they knew better.
“When I wrote this song, I was thinking back on all the notes my teachers wrote on my report cards: Would be a perfect student if only she would stop talking, attitude adjustment needed, lacking self-discipline, etc. It’s almost funny to me how harsh my teachers were and how they made the littlest things feel like the end of the world!” CYN says. “After what felt like a ton of pressure under a constant magnifying glass, I still did it my way and I turned out alright.”
Furthering the boast is that CYN, who just capped off a glowing week at SXSW, will next month hit the road with blossoming Norwegian pop star Sigrid, who remains no stranger to our digital pages. The quick jaunt hits four cities along our North American coasts before CYN takes her talents out to Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in June.
Yeah yeah that all sounds quite “Alright.”
