‘Tag’ Trailer: Of course this is based on a true story

Just when you thought the stupid idea well was nearly dry, leave it to a studio like Warner Bros. to buy the rights to a Wall Street Journal article about a group of friends that have been playing a game of tag for 30 years. Yes, that’s right: Tag: Based on a True Story is going to be annihilating your brain cells in the summer heat, though it has a cast well worth your time. Jeremy Renner (insert “here’s Hawkeye” joke here), Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson and Hannibal Buress make up the group of friends that we’ll watch touch each other in comedic ways and at inappropriate times, and that alone might make it a bit more interesting than what we originally thought.

Well, it’s not like Warner Bros. hasn’t had a bunch of success with making dumb ideas into comedy gold: See The Lego Movie and its spin-offs for further proof, and just take a look at the reasonable success of Game Night for why this seems like an even more attractive buy now. We’re down for Hannibal Buress’ goofiness any day of the week (his joke about being lactose intolerant being the single greatest gag in the entire trailer), and again, that ensemble looks dope as fuck. Are we cautiously excited about this movie? We guess we are?

Anyways, if you’d like to know more about the real-life basis for the film, this article from The Spokesman Review will enlighten you a bit. It takes some serious commitment to play a game as silly and physical as tag over the course of thirty years without getting stale: you’ve got to wonder if any of these guys feel like they’re married to the game now. They should go pro.

Tag hits theaters on June 15.
