‘Venom’ Trailer: Well, anything’s a step up from Topher Grace

Man, what is up with this Venom movie? Spider-Man’s mega-villain from the grimy ’90s is getting his own feature film, but it’s attracted a bunch of talent well above its pay grade.

Like, who would have thought Sony would have been able to attract legitimate actors like Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate to what sounded like, for all intents and purposes, a ridiculous attempt to cash-in on the R-rated Superhero craze that Fox kicked off with Deadpool and Logan? We didn’t! And now we’ve gotten our first glimpse at the film in the form of a short trailer that dropped on Thursday morning, and it is… interesting, to say the least.

Peep it:

You’re probably wondering where our boy Venom is in all of this, and the most likely answer is inside of the computers of whatever VFX house is currently working on his look, but much like the first trailer for Batman Begins, they’re attempting to emphasize the quality of the cast, a few minor stunts, and the particular tone they’re cultivating. It’s less horror-focused than, say, The New Mutants (and it is fucking crazy to think that this movie is coming out before that one hits theaters), but it still is drastically different than what we’ve seen from Sony’s Superhero output so far. So we’re not so bothered by his absence, given that we know what he’s going to look like (he’s big and black and white, what else is there to know?).

What we are surprised by is Tom Hardy’s frankly ridiculous take on a New York accent, especially given that this looks like it’s taking place in San Francisco. Then again, we probably shouldn’t be, given our boy’s talents for selling ridiculous accents to the masses, in spite of all logic or reason suggesting otherwise.

Venom hits theaters on October 5.
