One of the low-key coolest shows ever to happen in Boston was A Place To Bury Strangers’ January 2005 appearance at Great Scott in Allston. A snowstorm white-shat all over the city, and a small crowd gathered trudged to the venue in blizzard-like conditions for that night’s edition of The Plan, a bill the New York noise-slingers’ shared with The December Sound and The Brother Kite. APTBS delivered one of the craziest sets these eyes and ears have ever seen, and 13 years later, remain as ruthless as they were that cold-ass night. Last week, Oliver Ackerman and crew returned with “Never Coming Back,” another tumultuous rumbler that leads their fifth studio album, Pinned (out April 13 via Dead Oceans). “That song is a big concept,” Ackerman says in press notes. “You make these decisions in your life… you’re contemplating whether or not this will be the end. You think of your mortality, those moments you could die and what that means. You’re thinking about that edge of the end, deciding whether or not it’s over. When you’re close to that edge, you could teeter over.” It’s far from over, just as it was in Boston 13 years ago. Listen to “Never Coming Back” below, and scan APTBS upcoming live dates, which always come highly recommended. Photo by Ebru Yildiz.
