Whether he likes it or not, Gaz Coombes will never not be asked about a potential Supergrass reunion. But anyone who has been paying attention to the Oxford musician lately know he’s doing just fine as a solo artist, thank you very much, as he flexed his usually impressive songwriting acumen on 2015’s stellar LP Matador. Now he’s back with a new single called “Deep Pockets,” and the vibrant number is the lead offering of his latest solo LP, World’s Strongest Man. That’s due May 4 via Hot Fruit/Caroline International, and to celebrate, he’s back in the United States for a handful of coastal dates around a SXSW appearance. Since there’s no Boston date, we’ll fixate on the video, which finds Coombes trapped in a never-ending ride-sharing abyss. “I shot the ‘Deep Pockets’ video on a shoestring, mostly in LA at the end of 2017,” he says. “The idea came from the lyrics & memories of weird night drives over the years — a never-ending car journey laced with paranoia, intermittent hallucinations & unexpected carpooling. I liked the idea of getting together with some fun, interesting people in a car at night, filming it all and just seeing what happened. It worked out well. They all did great.” The video was directed, filmed, and edited by Coombes himself; watch it below. Featured image by Steve Keros.
