Sad news to pass along on this Wednesday, as word is circulating that Mark E. Smith, legendary poet and frontman of Manchester post-punk band The Fall, has died. He was 60.
The Fall’s manager Pam Van Damned has relayed the word, writing, via Fall News: “It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith. He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”
Smith cancelled shows in North America last summer, including gigs in Brooklyn and Louisville’s Cropped Out Festival, due to failing health.
Many were quick to take to Twitter and offer their respects. Andy Bell of RIDE tweeted “thanks for the music,” while acclaimed DJ Dave Haslam added: “The death of Mark E Smith is news I’d been dreading. One of my heroes, and a man I was proud to call a friend. I wrote this about him last year, knowing he was ill.”
Actor Paddy Considine called Smith “an artist that knew no compromise. A total one off and original. What a legend.”
The Fall formed in 1976 and released more than 30 studio albums, developing a cult-like fan base. Smith had long been the lone remaining original member of the group.
We’ll post more info when it becomes available.
