Studio 52 is a community artist space located in the heart of Allston, and is proud to support the Boston music scene and local artist community.
Pop music history is littered with stories of lineup changes surfacing via nasty public disputes, bitter departures, and irreconcilable inner-band feuds. Those days appear to be over — with the well-intended choosing to instead appreciate and honor departing members with new music in the form of old compositions. A few weeks back Speedy Ortiz bid farewell to guitarist Devin McKnight with the posting of an older unreleased song, and now Boston guitar-rock trio Lady Pills have followed suit in a similar manner.
This morning (July 29), on the eve of their appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago next week, Lady Pills have released a new/old song as a parting gift to drummer Claire Duhring, who has relocated back to her native California. The show of support and appreciation is called “Old Song,” a noisy bouncer of a track and swirls and jets in that familiar Lady Pills way, not unlike the sound and style on last year’s Babe City Records breakout album Despite. It’s also the last recording Duhring performed with the group.
“We feel it is appropriate to share ‘Old Song’ and release it to thank you her and acknowledge everything fully,” guitarist/vocalist Ella Boissonnault tells Vanyaland. “We could not have begun this journey without Claire and we are grateful for all that has been with her. That being said, we also are releasing this to close that chapter of Lady Pills and to move forward, being true to the full expression of ourselves and our music. We could not be more excited for what the future holds.”
That future includes a show at Alphaville in New York tonight, and the aforementioned Lollapalooza appearance, set for Saturday (August 5). Filling in for Duhring and joining Boissonnault and mainstay bassist Alison Dooley will be Bat House’s Pompy, though the search for a permanent replacement on drums is underway.
