It’s always wonderful when our greatest living movie star, Tom Cruise, decides to do something other than the competence porn he’s become known for in the past couple of years (see: the Mission Impossible and Jack Reacher series), and his role in 2014 action masterpiece Edge of Tomorrow was an absolute breath of fresh air into the sci-fi action subgenre.
Well, Cruise has re-teamed with his director from that movie, Doug Liman, for the true-life drug thriller American Made, in which he gets fucking blanketed in cocaine, crashes planes, and deals with Pablo Escobar.
It looks like a lot of fun!
That Southern accent Cruise is rocking might be the best thing he’s done since turning 50 (yes, that’s right, Tom Cruise is 54!), and we honestly can’t wait for this one. Liman’s a deeply underrated action director (his prior film, The Wall, was well-received but out of theaters in a week), and we’re excited to see what he brings to the table, knowing that he can already extract a good performance from Cruise. Let’s just hope The Mummy is half as fun as this looks.
Here’s a synopsis: “Barry Seal (Cruise), a TWA pilot, is recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States. The operation spawns the birth of the Medellin cartel and almost brings down the Reagan White House.”
American Made hits theaters on September 29.
