The Upper Crust have long been a staple of Boston’s rock scene, standing out from the pack with their pantaloons and powdered wigs, but by no means compromising the music. Delusions of Grandeur, the sixth and latest effort from the band, came out earlier this month and features instant rocque classics like “Frippery and Foppery,” “Flagrante Delicto” and “Only a Lowly Lackey.”
Frontman Lord Bendover is, as always, joined by fellow rabble-rousers Count Bassie on bass, Duc D’istortion on guitar and Jackie Kickassis on drums. Their AC/DC inspired riffs with a French aristocrat’s dry wit lyrical bent is in tact as ever. Delusions of Grandeur follows up the 2006 LP Revenge for Imagined Slights, where the band took aim at local food chain Upper Crust Pizzeria. Both are still standing tall, so it looks as if the feud has resulted in a stalemate.
To celebrate the new album’s release, the Crust will perform at ONCE Ballroom in Somerville Friday night (April 28).
Below is the video for the first single, “Little Castrato,” which tells the tale of a poor castrato whose singing voice is persevered for all time by castration before it has the chance to change. Boston singer-songwriter and guitarist Hayley Thompson-King appears on the track and plays the titular doomed castrato in the clip.
