As the Boston music scene focuses its attention on Friday’s arrival of Cambridge rock club Sonia, another new stage in town is not far off from its own grand opening.
City Winery, the combination music venue, restaurant, and wine bar that already has successful operations in New York, Chicago, Nashville, and elsewhere, is eyeing a summertime opening for its space at One Canal Street in the Bulfinch Triangle Historic District just outside North Station. A rep for City Winery tells Vanyaland there is no set opening date, but the venue should be operational “later in the summer — July, maybe even August.”
Last week, Universal Hub reported the Boston Licensing Board approved City Winery’s liquor license, which it bought from the closed Mass Ave Tavern at 94 Massachusetts Ave. in the Back Bay. Universal Hub has some interesting details about Boston’s City Winery: “The wine bar will actually have two dining rooms — a 300-seat area that will require reservations for watching the night’s performer and a 280-seat room where anybody can show up to eat, just not to see the show.”
To get an idea of the types of shows City Winery is expected to host here in Boston, one only needs to look at its New York calendar, which includes appearances by Toad The Wet Sprocket’s Glen Phillips (tonight), Joshua Radin (tomorrow), and Craig Finn & The We All Want The Same Things Band (April 4).
In the meantime, City Winery is producing its “Downtown Seder” event at Boston Laughs this Sunday (April 2), the first of a four-city “Seder-tour” led by City Winery CEO Michael Dorf (who also founded New York City venue The Knitting Factory). Boston is the first stop on the run, and the night features Israeli Superstor David Broza, folk icon Livingston Taylor, and comedians Judy Gold and Joel Chasnoff.
