This December, when we start crafting our Best of 2017 lists, we might add a new category: A roundup of the best compilations. The past few weeks have seen a slew of excellent comps coming out of New England, from The Record Co.’s Beast to the rallying cry of We Are Not Trump, and yesterday another extensive collection of united sounds was birthed in support of Planned Parenthood.
It’s called Solidarity Mixtape Volume Two, the follow-up to December 2014’s inaugural comp to support Black Lives Matter, and it was crafted by Trophy Lungs’ Kevin Bogart. Among the 52 artists and bands taking part are Bad Boys Club (who released their own EP for Planned Parenthood on Inauguration Day), Choke Up, Diablogato, The Offseason, The Shills, The Old Edison, Save Ends (covering Jawbreaker), and others.
“The idea of putting another compilation together came when some friends and I drove down to Washington D.C. for the Women’s March,” Bogart tells Vanyaland. “It was absolutely incredible to see how many people came together to fight for women’s rights. I wanted to figure out the best way to help as an ally and my friend reminded me of the Black Lives Matter benefit compilation we organized a few years ago.”
Bogart says there was no shortage of bands wanting to lend their music to the cause.
“I started tossing the idea of a new benefit compilation for Planned Parenthood to some bands and was instantly [hit up] with responses of people wanting to help,” he adds. “I couldn’t be more thankful to all my friends who came through to put this together and if anything I hope this inspires people to start doing actions of their own.”
The comp has a starting point cost of just $5, but interested donors can certainly chip in more if he or she can swing it.
