From looking at how blues-based rock and roll has made a bit of a comeback in this century, a case can be made that Austin musician Black Joe Lewis is one of the more underrated adopters of the style. His blend of howls and talking blues — reminiscent John Lee Hooker and Motown swagger — is nothing short of stunning both on record and on the stage. This year, Lewis and his backing band The Honeybears are poised to break through to a new level of stardom, and their new video for “PTP” is a great start.
The music video is completely animated while being adorned in the colors of crimson red and marigold yellow. Roger Haus is behind the illustration and animation along with undertaking the editing duties with Eloi Tomàs. The amazing assortment of colors is courtesy Anna Curto. The visuals has Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears performing while a girl moves around on a pair of roller skates. It’s a groovy track and the video does it justice.
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears’ new album Backlash is due out February 10, and on that same day the crew kick off a tour of North America at Waterloo Records in Austin. Two weeks later (February 24), they’ll be making a stop at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge to heat up the bitter chill.
