Hotline Fling: Red Sox are trying to get Drake to play Fenway Park this summer

This summer’s concert calendar at Fenway Park has a lot of the same ol’ same ol’.

But joining Dead and Company (June 17 and 18), New Kids on the Block (July 8), James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt (August 11), Billy Joel (August 30) could be a fresh face from the land of Blue Jays: Toronto rapper and living meme Drake.

Yes, we started from the bottom of the AL East now we here.

MassLive reports that the Red Sox have made a play for Drake to perform live at Fenway at some point this year. Speaking at the Red Sox Winter Weekend at Foxwoods Resort Casino a few days ago, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy tipped his pitch when discussing the “Hotline Bling” rapper.

“We’ve tried to bring in as many different types of acts as we can to appeal to different demographics,” Kennedy said. “The reality is with the baseball schedule the way it lays out, we’re sort of at the mercy of the touring and who’s out, which act can sell 30 to 35,000 tickets. For example, we’ve been approaching Drake this year. We would love to have Drake come and we understand he’s not doing a big summer tour. But that’s an example of someone [we’ve] proactively gone out after. And we’d love to have him come to Fenway Park given his popularity.”

If you’re reading this, it might be too late.

Or maybe not.

“We’re not going to give up,” Kennedy said. “It sounds like he’s coming up pursuing different sort of one-off ideas. Typically the concerts are routed either by Live Nation or AEG and a very set number of dates are going to play and a set number of cities and locations. But when folks go off and do one-off shows like Pearl Jam did last summer, we’re able to make a pitch directly to them and say this is why you should come to Fenway on a one-off basis. But yeah, we’re going to continue to pursue one-off opportunities with someone like Drake.”

Just call him on his bullpen phone.
