Last month, Vanyaland voted MØ’s “Final Song” as one of the best tracks of 2016, but we’re six days into the new year and her 2017 material is already blowing her previous yield out of the water. The Danish pop starlet’s newest single, a hot-mess-themed plead named “Don’t Leave,” exposes her raw side while also gearing up for her forthcoming album.
As with most successful MØ songs, the single pairs her with a DJ with “snake” in their name (this time around it’s British duo Snakehips and not DJ Snake). There’s remnants of the exotic synths that carried her 2014 smash “Lean On” in the background, but the lyrics tend towards Tove Lo’s signature and blunt “I’m a trainwreck” attitude.
It’s a new look for MØ, a traditionally squeaky-clean figure in pop, but she comes across as genuinely desperate in her honest pleads on the chorus. “I’m not just a fuck-up/I’m the fuck-up you need,” she laments on the pre-chorus.
Talk about relatable.
Listen to “Don’t Leave” below, and count your blessings if you live in one of the American cities a certain Karen Marie Aagaard Ørsted Andersen is visiting come March.
