Here at Vanyaland, we’re used to reporting on things closing. So today we’re beyond thrilled to relay news of an opening — of a new record store this weekend called Blue Bag Records.
The shop comes from one-time Bullet LaVolta and Cul De Sac drummer Chris Guttmacher, who ran Blue Bag out in Los Angeles. Back in March, he announced the store — which boasted having “20,000 used vinyl records in any genre you can think of” — was closing and relocating to the Boston area.
With the grand opening set for this Saturday at noon, the location is locked in: Blue Bag is situated at 2325 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge, the former site of Mercy’s Fashion, and not far from Somerville’s Davis Square.
A force in the Boston music scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Bullet LaVolta are perhaps best known for a gig that occurred after Guttmacher, a founding member of the group, had left the band; they headlined the WFNX 8th Birthday Party at Axis on September 23, 1991, playing with Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana on the eve of the release of Nevermind.
