New York City was many things in the ’90s, but when it came to rock and roll, it just wasn’t very cool. One lone exception to all that were D Generation, the Jesse Malin-fronted band of unsung Coney Island High misfits who didn’t sound like anyone else in town. The lifespan of D Gen and their vintage, ’70s-glittered glam punk was short and over before it really began, and their best work (1994’s now out-of-print debut LP off Chrysalis Records, with the flaming television on the cover) just wasn’t properly digested and appreciated by the grunge- and alt-rock-obsessed masses.
Everybody’s loss.
This summer, the boys are back with a new album — their first since 1999’s Through The Darkness — and a tour that (very unfortunately) doesn’t come to Boston. But us here in New England do have the new record to lean on; it’s called Nothing Is Anywhere and its out July 29 on Bastard Basement Records. Listen to the LP’s latest firecracker of a single, “Militant”, as well as another new track, “Apocalypse Kids”, below.
“We originally got together as a reaction to everything that was sick and empty out in the world,” says Malin in a press release. “We thought we were pissed off in the ’90s, but now it’s worse then ever.” Adds guitarist Danny Sage, who’s been making music with Malin since he was 13: “We made it through everything… We’re still fucking here.”
Check out all of D Gen’s summer tour dates, including the Nothing Is Anywhere record release party July 30 at Irving Plaza in New York. Maybe, just maybe, we can get a Boston date by the time the year is out.
