The best songwriters have a way of uplifting the soul and leaving a lasting impression that few can match. Lyrics exuding a flurry of emotions and structure resonating feeling are key ingredients for a gem of a song. Northampton folk-rock act Winterpills achieve that and more with the stunning “Freeze Your Light”, which first surfaced on March LP Love Songs. The song grabs hold of your heart and never lets go; today, its black and white music video is being premiered on Vanyaland. Watch it below.
Directed by Jason Mazzotta with David Newland on cinematography and editing duties, the video starts a bit eerie with an abandoned stove and oven in the yard of a house with co-vocalists and songwriters Philip Price and Flora Reed running through a fenced gate. As they enter a house, there’s a some dust that kicks up, Reed puts a record on the player and she begins to dance with Price. The video then pans toward a blonde girl in the corner recording Price and Reed on a vintage camera, then it pans towards the two dancing only to pan back to the corner of the room where the blonde has vanished. There also are shots that focus on Price and Reed as a couple as a metaphor of perseverance through the bleakness that surrounds them.
The rest of the video has shots of the band performing the track featured concluding with Price and Reed escaping the house and leaving the bleakness behind. Winterpills will be performing at The Green River Festival taking place at Greenfield Community College in Greenfield over the weekend of July 8 to 10 with the likes of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Dawes, Peter Wolf, Shakey Graves, Shovels and Rope and many others.
