Fifty years ago next month, the Rolling Stones played a show at the Manning Bowl in Lynn, Massachusetts. The June 24, 1966 gig was cut short when thunderstorms rolled into the City of Sin; a melee broke out amongst those in attendance and police to use teargas to break it up. The Stones, according to lore, vowed never to return.
This week, Lynn newspaper the Daily Item is hoping to change their minds. With the Rolling Stones back in the news as participants of October mega-concert Desert Trip, the Daily Item yesterday wrote an open letter to the band asking them to come back to Lynn and finish the show.
Daily Item publisher Ted Grant offered up a whopping $737 payout to the band — for their troubles — and said that while the Manning Bowl long ago met its wrecking ball, the Stones could play at the Lynn Memorial Auditorium (capacity: roughly 2,000). The open letter is part of a story the Daily Item is working on to commemorate the infamous show’s 50th anniversary.
“A lot has changed in Lynn since last you were here,” Grant writes. “As you probably read in the Item, the city has experienced something of a renaissance.”
Grant has offered to pick the band up at Logan, and then take them to Land of a Thousand Hills coffee shop for a mid-day refresher and then offered the chance at a late dinner at Rossetti.
The band has yet to respond. Read the paper’s full letter below.
