Lemony Snicker: Mysterious posters around Manchester fuel rumors of new Stone Roses music

In America, when life hands you lemons, Beyoncé gets involved. In the United Kingdom, it means the Stone Roses are up to… something.

Last year, mysterious, no-text posters depicting the band’s iconic lemon logo started to pop up around their hometown of Manchester. And it ended up being a promo stunt for a headlining gig at T In The Park and a pair of massive shows at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium. This week, the images are sprouting up once again, and rumors are flying that we’ll soon be getting new music.

New music from the Stone Roses is a rare thing, so, understandably, people are in a panic. Spanning nearly three-decades, he Roses have released exactly two albums in their history — the classic debut in 1989, then the 1994 follow-up, Second Coming — and since their 2011 reunion have relied steadily on the old hits.

Now, with a string of big-ticket shows upcoming in the UK and a June 30 gig at Madison Square Garden in New York City fast approaching, the band’s sets may offer something new. In March, frontman Ian Brown said the Roses were recording new music, and it sounded “glorious”.

Stay tuned.
