Missing Piece: D’arcy Wretzky says she’d ‘consider’ reuniting with Smashing Pumpkins

One of the most electrifying lineups in ’90s alt-rock could be positioned for a full-on reunion.

Last month, former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha joined Billy Corgan on stage in Los Angeles, marking the first time the two have performed together in 16 years. With Corgan enlisting drummer Jimmy Chamberlin to tour with the Pumpkins in recent years, all that was missing from the band’s original lineup — which gave us gold-star albums like Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness — was bassist D’arcy Wretzky.

In a new interview with BlastEcho, Wretzky, who was fired from the Pumpkins 17 years ago, says she has been asked to rejoin the band a few times, and would now “consider going back.”

Wretzky says: “Circumstances would have to be a certain way… It’s much too complicated. I wouldn’t be able to tell you anyway”. She adds that she hasn’t spoken to Corgan since 1999, the same year she was fired, but says that the recent reunion of Corgan and Iha was “really healthy”.

Though Wretzky says she hasn’t kept up too much on the Pumpkins in recent years, there is a bit of longing for those ’90s days. “Over the course of 12 years jamming with people who just clicked, you could just do it forever and ever and ever,” she says. “For me that doesn’t happen very often and I really miss that.”

It shouldn’t be long before Corgan chimes in on this. Watch he and Iha perform in L.A. below, and check out our photo gallery of the Pumpkins recent appearance at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston.
