Third Coming: The Stone Roses set to release first new album in 22 years

When the Stone Roses play New York City later this year, they’ll be joined by an unlikely new asset: New music.

British newspaper the Mirror reported over the weekend that the legendary Manchester band is set to release their long-awaited third record later this year, all to coincide with a string of summer gigs that includes four sold-out shows in their hometown’s Etihad Stadium. They also play Madison Square Garden on June 29.

The Mirror cited an unnamed source, but it was enough to make global headlines.

“Ian Brown and the lads have been busy getting their next album ready,” the source tells the paper. “It will be album number three… It’s a long time coming but they feel the time is right now… They’ve been back in the studio. Everyone is very excited about it.”

Aren’t we all? The new Roses LP will be the band’s first in 22 years; 1994 sophomore effort Second Coming was maligned for taking five years to complete after the band exploded onto the scene with their 1989 debut, which stands as one of the greatest records of all time.

The Stone Roses first reunited in 2011, and played California’s Coachella Music & Arts Festival in 2013. The band, in recent interviews, have hinted at new music, though nothing has been confirmed. Spokespeople for the group have not commented on the Mirror’s story.
