Now that Black Beach are back safely in Massachusetts after their winter tour with Midriffs, it’s time for the Middleboro rock band to present us with some new tunes. And that’s what we get today in the form of “Static Sound”, a scuzzy garage-punk ripper that’s the first filthy taste from their new record, Shallow Creatures.
The song opens with a hypnotic wall of sound before blasting off into a sonic frenzy of riffs and jolts. We’re told “Static Sounds”, with its constant lyrical refrain of “All I hear are static sounds”, is meant to encapsulate “the mentality of a youth obsessed with rock”, and we can feel the energy reaching out of our speakers and slapping us silly. This is what we’ve come to expect from Black Beach, a trio who have built quite a following in the Boston underground and last year served up the essential House of the Rising Fuzz compilation via the efforts of bassist Ben Semata.
Shallow Creatures, meanwhile, is due out March 4 via Black Beach’s own label, Basement Sounds, and the release party goes down that night at the Middle East in Cambridge for a fan-fucking-tastic Illegally Blind Presents bill alongside Steep Leans, Dent, and the Mardi Kings.
