Girls to the front — this spring’s Boston Calling Music Festival should be one hell of a weekend.
After some careful teases yesterday on social media, the bi-annual music festival at City Hall Plaza unveiled its full Spring ’16 lineup this morning, and it’s a wildly diverse and eclectic bill that’s a bit more upbeat and dance-minded than recent edition.
Headlining the May 27 to 29 outdoor jam are Australian vocal powerhouse Sia (one of only two or three North American shows all summer), British dance machine Disclosure, and Swedish electro-pop icon Robyn.
The undercard for the 23-band lineup is pretty strong, too, and the female acts really jump off the page: Courtney Barnett, Haim, Sufjan Stevens, Miike Snow, Elle King, Janelle Monáe, ODESZA, BØRNS, City and Colour, Charles Bradley, Lizzo, Battles , Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Christine and the Queens, the Vaccines, and others.
On the local front, this year’s double offering of homegrown talent features a pair of recent Boston Music Award winners: guitar-rock band Palehound (Best New Artist) and breakout rapper Michael Christmas (Best Hip-Hop Artist). There will also be a third stage featuring comedy and other performances.
“We believe the upcoming festival will be the most interesting edition yet,” says festival co-founder Brian Appel. “The lineup that Aaron [Dessner] and his team created is amazing. We’ve spent so much time this year on making the attendee experience the best it can be, from the new food and beverage experience to the new performance stage; we have even more programming space this year. We also still have a few more surprises to share.”
Three-day tickets are available online tomorrow (Friday, January 15) at 10 a.m. Some added details: “For the first 24 hours, tickets will be available at the special rate of $170 general admission and $349 VIP; a savings of $15 on a GA pass and $26 on a VIP pass. Regular pricing commences Saturday, January 16 at 10 a.m. EST: $185 for General Admission and $375 for VIP.”
